Same as Sir Walter Raleigh playing balls or was it bowls when the Spanish Armada was in the channel and refused to go until he had thrown his last bowl. The truth is he was probably scared witless , and was hoping they would change their mind turn around and go home. Notice I said Witless. JS

Just a little aside, the Black Watch owned by Fred Olsen was later sold on to become an accommodation ship and at present is subject to an injunction placed on its present owners by Fred Olsen due to their belief that it is going to be scrapped at Alang which they believe does not operate in a manner that complies with E.U. regulations regarding the safe scrapping of ships in an environmental safe way.

Think you'll find that was Sir Francis Drake JS, legend says he was playing Bowls at Plymouth Hoe when the Armada was first sighted. Cheers

Thanks la ! They all look the same to me, remember now the Sir Walter Raleigh was the one who smoked a lot wasn’t he had to go to the states whenever he wanted a packet of cigarettes. Or was that someone else ? Either that or he was a keen cyclist . Cheers JS

Yep it was him alright but he got his uppance, as it's said he had water thrown over him when seen smoking his pipe for the first time, as they thought he was on fire, he
also introduced us to potatoes, that's why he is the patron saint to the galley boys and chip shops , still didn't stop them from chopping his head off , cheers.

The truth of the matter is that he tried some of that 'Veet' for men.
He tried it on his nether regions but in time the hair began to grow hence the reason for him scratching his balls when the Spanish arrived.

#1596. Cappy must be a big fan of him. Him being in the tattie trade at one time. Anyone thinking of a suitable Xmas gift for him , a picture of Sir Walter Raleigh sitting on the bike named after him , a clay pipe in one hand and a potato in the other , would be surely appreciated by Cappy . Cheers JS
