#61. After she came back on board you must of had to check them again . Do you know what her TPI and stowage factor was , shes better looking than the previous caricature you put up , that everyone fancied . Can already see Cappy changing his mind about the Emu girlfriend he had . So may have to suffer him in the galley a bit longer. JS

Well ,having mislaid my 'Every Boys Bumper Book of Ships Figureheads '(4th edition )many years ago- I think lent it to an old seadog captain to satisfy his nostalgia for figureheads and sea chests,or so he said,I resorted,as one does,to thumbing through the surprisingly well-thumbed Figureheads and Bowsprit pages of the shipchandlers catalogue ,and think the best one might be this one-,that is our Natalia adorning the bows of a vessel called,appropriately-Natalia.
No,Natalia is not a whale, and is not impaled upon our bow. She's very obliging and even took a forward draft reading for me...
she looks trimmed nicely (the boat that is) must have a big cannon on the stern?

Now we need a figure head, but what kind?

Something disposable maybe so if it fall s off we can easily get another.
Then of course we could ask Cappy if we could borrow Mary for a while, but with only one leg she would be out of balance could have the ship going round in circles.

But if that is to be the case them may be an old used MP might do, they are very good art going round in circles.
Then maybe Sleepy Joe, he is not doing any important work just now, USA do not need him and the spray might freshen him up a bit.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

#1583 Is the cannon for self defence Tony ? Were you thinking of using round shot which may do a lot of damage to the target, or Grapeshot which would be a bonus for the cannon crew as could have as a bonus the first lick of the grapes spattered on the target if they had managed to hit. Those that had misbehaved during the voyage would be last in line , a much more severe penalty than being logged a days pay and fined a days pay, that they probably didn’t have in the ship in any case , since the bail money it cost to get them out of Gaol in Gibraltar the last time there. #1584 Re lack of figurehead ,could maybe bend the rules about and just fly the black ball on the jackstaff forward. Possibly will be anchored mostly off the flesh pots of the world in any case. Someone can stand by at night to flash the aldis on the black gall to show it off. When steaming we will be going that slow others will think we are at anchor in any case. A black ball could be very representative of the crew as many may be suffering from this well known affliction . JS

Didn’t like to mention that one Cappy, being the gentleman that I ain’t. That was of course the Venus sailing out of the Tyne at one time ? The other one of course being the Jupiter. Marks and Sparks used to do a good trade in Newcastle when the passengers from them went shopping . Also the Sally Ann with all the old clobber they left behind. JS

Swoon ! Oh God, cappy,I nearly thought you were going to quote the full unexpurgated seamen's version there!

We all set sail on the good ship Venus
By God ! You should have seen us!
The figurehead was a nude in bed
    etc,etc,etc !

Then the second verse goes on to about the boy standing on the burning deck
    Playing a game of cricket
    etc,etc,etc,
(Though why one would want to play a game of deck cricket while an inferno was raging all around you sounds bloody foolish to me !Dunno !.gif)
