Terry mate.
I am marroned in the Mexican desert.
Waiting for a high tide so I can get back aboard.
Cover for me while I am adrift. Cant afford another logging.Thats because we never get any pay on this ship.
Kind of enjoy the odd flogging though from Les B Ann and her feather whip.
Hell now I have to go for a cold shower.

Pray tell Den where are you getting the water from in the dessert? Vernon is in charge of food supply and those Oxo cubes are in fact dice he scrubbed the dots off and painted brown. The nearest we will get to any sort of fowl is fowl weather and a low flying seagull. Den those feathers by the way came from a louse ridden duck she found in the Cairo market along with an up to date copy of a Port Said Bible, so watch out she will have some new fancies to offer when you return.
-
Can't wait John. Haven't seen a Port Said Bible for years.
Not sure about the lousey duck thing though.
Enough water in the desert for showering, just dont waste it drinking the stuff.
Have to drink beer and rum.
Life is tough.

Ship's Cook
I'm being serious for a change but am I right in thinking that no ship on what was British articles was allowed to sail without a ship's 'ticketed' cook.
It's O.K. Den we're not going to get rid of you. By the way do have a cook's 'ticket'? My W.R. has been knocking out some Welsh cakes which when done properly are fantastic, but I notice now down here in the west country there's a lot of these cake shops that try to past theirselves off as being able to make 'em.
It's the same as some of these mass produced Cornish pasties or Devonshire tiddy oggies.
Anyway lads grateful for your imput. Mike;):D:o
-
Correct Mike. All ships had to have a cook with a ticket.
I served an apprenticship as baker & confectioner ashore, so was just a common old baker.
Dont think any left these days. Super markets etc just open boxes from mass produced placers.
Still make Cornish Pasties and sausage rolls from time to time. Hate the store bought ones.

Cooks ticket
I think that's right becuase I had to wangle myslef a place at the London School of Nautical Cookery to do the course and get a cooks ticket so that I could go on and get a Chief Stewards job.
I was told that the Chief Steward had to have a cooks ticket so that the ship could sail if the cook went AWOL.

Unless i am mistaken, on the caitering side of things, did we all have to have a ticket to go to sea,
i could be wrong.
Or am i just barcking up the wrong tree here.

No Mick catering crew only needed a ticket for the train from Waterloo to Soutampton. Brian is correct in his story about cooks and cheif stewards, no reflection on him but most of them were qualified thiefs. Second stewards were even worse. But a ship may sail without a captain but no with out a ships cook or carpenter, though the connection I fail to see. But there in lies the problem as there were cooks, that is cooks who cooked faily well, cuckoos, cooks who thought they cooked fairly well, and willful bloody murderers, who could even burn water.

Hi John,
I hope you are not referring to the cooooks and stewards on our valiant ship.! You know what a
temperamental lot they are . I can honestly say Ive had 2 square meals since Ive been aboard, both i prepared myself. One was a tin of Fray Bentos corned beef. and the other was an Oxo cube i found on Terry's cabin deck.I did try to eat one of Dens tabnabs, by dunking it in my hot coffee, didn't work it just broke in half and smashed the bottom out of my mug. Did ask Vernon for a new mug he told me to repair it and gave me a bit of selatape. I just have to remember to drink from it standing up, otherwise if i sit down it dribbles into my lap and it looks like Ive peed myself.

The Bitch is back
Now, Now, Now, what's this I hear that Chief and Second Stewards were on the fiddle? I have served in both ranks, and never has anything untoward has ever happened to me, I was as honest as the day long in 22 years at sea. Now I am just a second cook on this ship. Take care...... Terry
