I was July 26 1960 and I was an AB on the GSNC coaster Tern and we were tied up at the cobble-stone quay in the tiny little port of Tonney-Charente deep in the wine country of western France. I remember it well because I tried to explain that it was my “Anniversaire” to a very pretty teenaged young lady who’s eagle eyed mother ran the local tavern. There was no way I was going to get my way with this maiden. Even a trip to the local cinema was chaperoned by the “dragon”.
The little lady did contrive to get physically very close as I sat on my stool at the bar but that was it. A lot of fuel for daydreams during the many trips to sea before I jumped ship in Australia in 1964.
I’ll be 85 this July 26. Wonder what happened to my dream girl.

Hi Jason
I was on a little coasting tanker in 51 and loved going into those little French posts, ah! days to remember.

Remember Caracas Bay well, bunkered there a few times, did go for a swim and got bitten by jellyfish.

Went swimming in Geelong once, a local said it's safe from sharks they have iron rods around the pool about six inches apart. In I went, diving under water there was a big hole where the rods had been prized apart, the sharks around there must have had arms.

PS.
There must be a shark restaurant in West Aus, six people have been taken by sharks in three nearby beaches the last few months.
Nothing Des, ten here have been taken by sharks in the last month according to one report.
The second hand car yard has now been shut down.
We always took a lifeboat out to the reef in Tahiti to dive and maybe gather some coral. One bloke had an underwater camera and would take photo's of us. Once he came running into my cabin with a photo he took of us all under water, sitting out on the edge of the reef, and in the background was an enormous shark, swimming happily by. None of us had seen it, even him taking the picture.
Oh! on the subject, I was in Ireland on leave on my 21st, having a ball at the Embassy ballroom, I think it was in Dundalk?
Wasn’t that not too far from Long Kesh Johnny. ? JS
