Hi Rod.
Your rust bucket was similar build to the Trevose my first ship though she was far from a rust bucket; just the standard British built tramp, the nearest to a lovely ship I sailed on was the Baron Kilmarnock the only tanker in the Baron fleet, she was built for a Swedish Company. But one ship that took my breath away when I first saw her coming through the Suez canal was the Greek Tanker Tina Onassis.

G'day Rodders, have to agree with you as to some of the 'floating appartment blocks, they is ugly'. But not all of the cruise ships look so bad, the smaller ones up to about 80,000 tons are not so bad, but the 5,000 plus blood numbers are just too much.

As to pretty ships of yesteryear, though I nvere sailed on the always liked the look of the City Ships.

Jan. 22, 1988. Australia's 200th birthday.

My wife and I celebrated along with Australia. We were in Hobart, Tasmania and mounted the Oz flag and our 'Stars and Stripes' along with congratulate signs on our camper and joined in the parade.

The next day we wandered around Hobart's Maritime Museum and there in a case was a model of my first ship, the Port Jackson. She wasn't quite as pretty as the Port Townsville, but I have a soft spot in my heart for her. Actually it was one of the best trips I made.

Port Townsville was spoilt by my having a fight with the Peggie (sp.?).

Not only because I was on the UCL Liners in the 1950;s and 60's but have always thought that they were lovely lookers.
Funnily my first Ship the old Dunnottar Castle was for me the prettiest one of all,it may have been old but was not only good to look at but a great Ship to work on with the finest Crew
The UCL Fruit Ships were really pretty too!
Oh yes the old Liners were the best and all of those mentioned in the Thread were defiantely good lookers!
Must also admit the the City Ships were great!

Rod, mine is deffinatly a blue funnel ship,they had such well proportioned lines and that beautiful flared bow like a u s Missouri class battleship ,always thought they looked good when light and you could see the boot topping and antifowling , Joe.

Maybe the way they were built but longevity was a way of life with ships from that era.

One point of interest is the draght, modern cruise ships of some 100,000 tons have a similar level.
