Hi Shipmates , Leaving any harbour on Christmas day/eve or new years day/ eve is a bad omen, in the olden days so they say...

I sailed with one Ships Master who would not leave port on a Sunday , he believed it to be serious bad luck , He would have been crap on Ferries

Out of 7 years in the MN I spent 5 Christmas Days actually at sea, 2 having sailed from the uk on 23rd December. Another 2 having loaded at Curacao in the month of December before Christmas Day every member of the crew was given a free parcel to open on Christmas Day from the Salvation Army I wonder of they still do that today. I always donate to the SA as a result of that little gesture so long ago.

One Christmas 1978 we were loading a VLCC on Sea Island in Saudi on Christmas Day, we sailed then on Boxing day. Christmas was banned. wrong place wrong time. we sailed out of the Gulf. for a few days then altered off the beaten track of ships stopped engines and the Christmas Party started.
Watches were still kept on the bridge.
I went down to the saloon at quarter past midnight and all were very bevied. I got a beer out of the fridge and sat at a table with an engineer. I looked over his shoulder and a fireman was having a knee trembler against the bulkhead with hs wife, both of her legs around his waist.
I said to the engineer , `Hey , thats your wife with the fireman, banging away, ` he just said , `I know , but what can you do`. I just got another can and went to my cabin,
He was a very weak man, his wife had already worked he way down the firemens allyway during the trip.
She even tried it with me once when I was turned in, she crashed through me cabin door p55ed and crashed on top of me in the bunk at 2 in the morning, I flung her out into the allway, I bet she was all sticky from the firemen.
A lot of that went on. Cheers
    Brian

Now Brian if you have had first dibs , would you ? I do not like wives at sea for those reasons , In the days of Mrs Captain and Mrs Chief engineer they were matronly ladies in my early days , but the second mate , mid night watch ran out of cigarettes and found the second steward in his bed on his wife . I thought the bastard should be logged , I mean doing such a disgusting think , Leaving the bridge mid watch , and assaulting the second steward

#35 yes it was quite interesting being 2nd steward......and having options to enter officers cabins ......without problems some wives did need a bit of comfort from time to time but luckly never got caught.......well we had to have some pleasures....

... Or equal Rights...If women are employed on ships and expect equal rights, they should accept all that goes with it. Have never heard of a case of rape on board. I do not agree with women in the forces being on the firing line either, nor in the RN serving on ships .If they do they should expect no special priviliges which they must do to keep them apart from men at certain times. It is no good saying they are the same as men they are not, physically, mentally or otherwise, I do believe they have a bigger brain though, they should use it in other occupations where they excel. You dont see in the Olympic games and such men wrestling with women or boxing or in most physical sports, why?? because they would in most cases be considered to be at a disadvantage. Men are Men and Women are Women, with others not knowing what they are, hence the call for same sex marriage. The world would be more compatable if some of these equal rights and others enjoyed their life as it is, and if they wanted to be of the other sex, go and pray for it at their re-incarnation. Most proper women like being who and what they are without wanting to compete all the time with men. Some of these so called professional women send a shiver down my back, they obviously have too many male hormones and in a lot of cases are Lesbians. However that is their business. I would and still do open the door for a Lady, some of the other female of the species I wouldn't. Cheers John Sabourn

John , there was a case last year where a female cadet died under strange circumstances , I think she had taken her own life after all edging the mate had raped her . I think she was South African and it was Safmarine But not 100% sure
