anyone who sailed out of manchester would know about tall funnels especially if they have removed or replaced one in winter in the rain or snow.

Not the funnel, the one I was talking about I think was plain blue funnel with a white swan.

I remember being in Auckland in 1954 and one of the Rangi boats was in. The crowd were painting or sooging the Funnel in Bosuns Chairs.and a gantline snapped and an AB fell to his death.
I heard that a chemical had been spilled on a gantline in the focsle head, and it had rotted it and it wasnt noticed.
Did any NZSC men hear of that?
.
another time I was on watch on a VLCC heading south towards the Cape and up ahead of us was the `Sir John Hunter` another VLCC, they radioed to us on VHF that a man had fallen off the Funnel and was badly injured, and if we could help with medicas. an hour later he radioed back the man had died of his injuries.
So not all Funnels are nice.

You would not believe the furore that those colours caused in C.P. The old buff funnel was far better looking especially on the white empress boats, so much so that just before its complete demise a few years ago C.P. ships as part of Hapag Lloyd had reverted to the old funnel design with the chequered flag on a blue background this time around.
The boyos in Canada paid a small fortune to an outfit in Canada to design that new funnel and it was made up of
1. Part of a circle to show that C.P. were world wide
2. A triangle pointing fwd. to show they were a go ahead company
3. A square for solidarity.
That was mid/early 70,s.
Less than 20 yrs later C.P. in the U.K. was finished, so much for fwd. looking and solidarity.
As an aside, Carnival started of with the Empress of Canada as there 1st ship and Carnival's funnel design bears remarkable likeness to that of C.P. and another thing, the 3 top men on the board of the C.P.R. were/are also on the board of Carnival and also Bolten Shipping who Mickey Arison was in bed with for a time.
Strange how the world turns at times innit?

To be honest I did like L+H funnel colours - always looked smart.
