Have a Photo of the Flaviano in one of my old albums,the pilot was shot down,captured,and executed.
There was a story doing the rounds that as the lads were pulling for the shore they were were asking for a tot!!,Iwould have needed more than a tot believe you me!.

I am a similar age to yourself ,and sailed with Eagle oil and Shell tankers between 1958 and 1962 , San Fortunato , San Calisto ,Vibex ,Hanetia , very many happy memories of those times .

The ones which I sailed on didnt seem to, or maybe it was because the tanker berths were a long way from anywhere, Mina- al - Amadhi, Little Aden, then there was Banias, Sidon, And Tripoli in the Eastern Med.loading offshore, we were like a bunch of well fed monks, on Esso at least. Nope, much preferred a nice big dry cargoship with time in port, a forest of derricks on the decks, and a social life ashore wherever we we were. And of course no beer rationing on board.
Hi Des Jenkins, I wonder if you joined the british builder in newcastle, I paid off her on26 oct 55. we had spent time in Dakkar, beruit, pireaus, venice. they were the good places, others were the gulf, mena and abadan. during these stops we seemed to have plenty of engine problems. dont think i finished the trip with a great deal of money. during the the loading in abadan we burst a loading pipe covering the ship with oil, quite the clean up.
