    Default The Wonders of Navigation.

The other night when the Moon was in a southerly declination, I was lying in bed reading my Nichols Concise Guide, as I normally do, engrossed in the chapter, `Projection of the Sphere` and `Mercator Sailing`, very interesting.
I then observed the Moon appearing round the side of the port window frame. I took a transit bearing of it, later when the Moon was aligned with the midship window frame I took another transit bearing, seeing that I had plenty of time I calculated, using the Marc St Heleir method and my book of Nories Tables and then discovered the true position of my house. It is in a position, Bolton Town Hall bearing 357 degrees by 1.27 miles,
I now know exactly where I live, when navigating my way home from the Club, and by allowing leeway and set I can now arrive home without drifting down the next avenue and turning to starboard into a berth in the young Divorcee`s house.
The Long Haired One is now wondering why I am now arriving home from the Club two hours earlier.
That Glenfiddach has a lot to answer to.
    Cheers
    Brian.

Obviously a lot of your neighbours, many from foreign lands, know of this method, it may be the reason you sometimes think you are in another country.

    Hi Brian.
I was away one time and my mother had to move house from our little village[Long story] she moved into a new council house in the local town.
I had paid off and was home just the one day when she said she was going to get my auntie to paper the rooms, as they were new houses I told her to wait untill the plaster was dry.
I went out on the grog that night, coming home I walked in the back door hung my top coat up on a peg and walked into the living room, sure enough my auntie [I thought] had papered the room, I said Christ Mum what has she done ? the paper had been taken around the corners with no break, gaps in the joints, I said what a mess, then I looked at the old woman and man sitting at the table, I hadn't seen them before.
Ever had a shiver run up the back of your neck from your heels? I was in the wrong bloody house, I fled grabbing my coat on the way, Our house was two doors up, those council houses all looked the same.
    Cheers Des

Now this is an interesting thread Brian. Unfortunately, the art of Navigation will remain a mystery to the student body entering our colleges in the last 10 years or so. SEXTANT, CHRONOMETER!! what's that???
