Hi Colin, I was on Sugar Exporter from July to October 1956. Great ship, don't think she was very old when I joined her. Joined her in Rotterdam for two trips to West Indies.

    Default Crystal sapphire

Hi Sailor 63,I joined the Sapphire in Cammel Lairds Birkenhead right off the stocks.Ithink it must've been one of the first ships out of Liverpool with a cafeteria set up,I was delighted to jump at the job of crew messman and I must say it was one of the best jobs I ever had at sea.The funny part of it was we Left the builders on a Saturday and the skipper had an inspection on Sunday all the units etc were still covered in sticky brown paper it was a hell of a job getting all this sticky paper off the sink unit and press ect plus the fact you will know it was like a cork "No Excuse" Obviously it should've had a full industrial cleaning before we joined her.WE did Salt Lake and Savannah La Ma Jamaica. One port we were taken ashore a fleet of Land Rovers awaited us and took us to this sugar plantation a real old Colonial Club, with it being the maiden voyage everything was free. You can guess the rest can I say the Captain was not amused.

    Smile Crystal Boats

    Hi Collin,
I sailed on most if not all of the Crystal Boats, as 4th.Eng. then 3rd. I joined the Crystal Bell at Cardiff in 1962 and roteted with a "Scouse" 2nd.,(can't remember his name) but his favorite song was the "Whipping Poof", we used to be called the "Black" gang, we got all the dirty jobs of transferring from one run down ship to the other, the "Old Doxfords" needed a lot of TLC, along with a lot of other mechanical parts of the ships, including on deck, otherwise they were great ships and good feeders, if our friebd Bill thought they were that bad, I guess HE must have had a problem, My experience with ALL on board was A1, all the "Mates" & Engineers and Deckhands, oilers etc., was nothing but great, we all got along very well, I found them to be "Happy Ships"

    Default Sugar line

Hi Sailor, I had two very enjoyable trips with Sugar Line. The first was on the Sugar Importer joining in Antwerp in December 1970. The run was Savannah La Mar, Salt River and back to Silvertown to discharge.
The second was on the Sugar Exporter joining october 72 in Silvertown. The run that time was Newfoundland to load paper for Baltimore, Norfolk to load Soya Beans for Tampico, Progresso, Vera Cruz, then on to Savannah La Mar and Salt River to load for Silvertown. Both ships were hard work on deck and in need of a lot of TLC. They were also very happy ships with good crews. A pleasure to sail on. As an afterthought does anybody remember Captain Midnight and his canoe who used to ferry the lads ashore in Savannah La Mar. I seem to remember that you used to have to keep bailing out all the way in order to keep dry. Oh happy days.
    Cheers Ron.
