P&O Captain Nick Carlton also remembered the 22-knot, steam turbine driven Arcadia. He served in her in the mid 1970s. "We made the ship's last Vancouver to Sydney line voyage in preparation for the ship being based fulltime in Australia for fulltime, one-class cruising," he recalled. "She was a lovely, very traditional ship. We would have two- and three-day layovers in some ports, but once at sea, we often ran at high speeds and burned huge amounts of fuel. Actually, those was lots of excess spending in those days. P&O ran the bars and the bingo – and so there was lots of theft by the crew. There was still full Union crews at the time, wages were high and some cabin stewards received such massive tips from passengers that they actually flew home in mid voyage. Ships like the Arcadia were also very solid, very strong. We will never see that standard of construction again."
