It would be the original, Methane Princess and Methane Progress, operated by Shell. Ran from Canvey Island to Arzew and back.

I did one return trip Canvey to Arzew and back as R/O on the Progress in 1980. Longest two weeks of my life... Followed that with 4 months on the Geomitra, Japan to Brunei and back, ad nauseam.

At least on the "G" boats you could count on decent weather some of the time. Even the odd bit of entertainment provided by a dodgy Malaysian shipowner sinking his coaster right under our bow... (Gastrana, 1983) They waited until they could see the colour of our ensign and then opened the sea cocks and called Mayday on 2182 Hoping to claim the insurance money no doubt.

My first trip with Cunard was the Lumiere a product tanker on the South Afriacan coast. Flew out to Cape Town to join her. Turned up at Heathrow in September 1977. First time flyer. Didn't have a clue where or when to board. It wasn't until I heard my name being called that I realised where I was to go. Arrived in Cape Town for a 3 night stay in hotel before ship arrived. 3 great days in CT with joining 5/E , followed by 4 great months on ship around the coast.
