    Default Flammulina

In Dec 1950 they told me at the Tilbury pool that the Flammulina was going to Curacao and back: a six week trip. So in spite of my aversion to tankers I took it. It turned out to be an 8 month trip. Curacao, Venezula, Aruba, Chile, Peru, Columbia, Italy, Greece. Persion Gulf, France and many more. I quite enjoyed it though.

Did 2 trips with shell, first on the Drupa, a coaster, going up & down the north sea, Shellhaven to Shetlands for 6 months, not fun, strange thing was, everyone was complaining how cold it was, and how they wished they were deep sea, nice & warm, my next trip was on the Super tanker SS Lyria, it was layed up in Singa's for months and then off to the Gulf to loadup and slow steam to Rotterdam to pay off, again 6 months later, but on the Lyria it was so hot, everyone was saying how they wish they were on a coaster, nice and cool!!.

    Default shell tankers

did 5 trips on the navicella in 55 and 56.first 4 with captain lee.one of the best skippers that i sailed with.
was 100% for his crew, including bailing me out of jail in curacao and telling the new mate not to throw some ladies of the ship in hamburg because his lads had been at sea and needed some recreation.
next skipper was captain hedley.not as good

    Hi PommyJohn1
Welcome aboard to the best MN site on the Net. You must have met the love of your life in Sydney. Great city Newcastle had many a good time there while with the Union Co on the NZ coast. I was on the Baron Kilmarnock a Baron boat [tanker] the only one they had, my mate [we sailed together 6years] jumped ship in Newcastlein Sept 54, he came aboard to see us on a later trip,we were running around the coast from Kwinana in Freemantlel the skipper saw him and gave him five minuets before he called the cops, Joe was off like a shot, never ever saw him again. Enjoy the site.
    Cheers Des
