Four Bells rum was usually standard on Shell ships. Crew got a tot after tank diving, officers bar was about three pence / tot (1/4 gill). One job I was on loaded Carioca rum in Caribbean (was running bunker fuel to all the little banana ports) it was so good everyone was drinking it, to the point where the Chief Steward was pleading with the boys to drink beer as his stock was deteriorating ha ha

They were lucky then, no free beer on any Shell Tanker, except Christmas
Hi Jampot.
My Father Hughie Taggart was the Cook on the Brika on a Voyage from the Tyne 28/7/43 through to 3/11/44 on the Clyde.
Hi I only sailed on 2 shell Tankers, the Hygromia and the Humilaria. There was a Rum ration as I remember but it wasn’t very often it would be distributed unless you were using a chipping hammer in the tanks after they had the butterworth’s running. If you’d gone into the tanks you got a tot of rum to gas free yourself.
The first mate had to make sure the tanks were gas free especially after carrying a cargo of high octane spirit. I remember the second engineer and myself being lowered into such a tank to repair a cargo valve. Even after the mate had passed it gas free we had to use tools made of brass to prevent causing sparks. No tots of rum were given to us.
Fouro.
Ach Well,
So much for letting you all know that engineers had also to carry out repairs on deck, during their time off from watchkeeping in the engine room.
Fouro.
Hi Fouro, was on norweigian ships for a while, they had rationalisation(phew thats a word) between deck and engine room, i can remember lapping in exhaust valves swinging an arm back and forth ,and painting the inside of the engine room casing , our feet standing in whammy stirrups, on the other hand we had engine room oppos on deck for sstandby, they used to get in the way,, mostly through over enthusiasm.
