Thanks Robert ,I'm just putting the flesh on a bald statement here,as many will probably be interested.Yet another structural failure of a doomed bulker over the last 50 years-thankfully without human casualties that time, though it could well have been different if Ireland had not allowed the vessel in--not all countries do....
Attachment 13821.
1990-Feb Bulker TRIBULUS(Br), dwt 129160, built by Hyundai,Ulsan,S.Korea -9 years old, loaded with iron pellets, loses the side shell in hold 8.
The Tribulus (2) was a 127,000 ton pure bulk carrier owned and operated by Shell.
Whilst loaded with iron ore, on a voyage from Sept.Isles to Rotterdam she had a massive side shell failure in way of Hold 8 in position 270miles southwest of Ireland in heavy
weather. The ship was allowed into Bantry Bay where she stayed for three months repairing. There
was some spillage probably bunker oil.
Hold 8 was the aftmost hold. Apparentlythe damage, a 21 m by 10 m hole, involved
the starboard fuel oil tank. The ship had 550 tons
of bunkers on board, probably half of which was in
this tank. The spill appears to have taken the form
of a slow leak which was largely contained by booms.
CTX has assigned a nominal spill volume of 50 m3
to this casualty.
The Tribulus was alternate hold loaded with No.
8 empty. This means she was in serious danger of
sinking as many bulk carriers have done in this situation.
In fact, most of the crew was helicoptered
off the ship well offshore when the weather had improved somewhat. The Irish decision to allowthe Tribulus in (note not all countries adopt this stance) probably saved the ship and most of the bunkers at the cost of some inshore spillage.
Sold after repairs she had a succession of owners from 1993 onwards ,finally being scrapped in China 2010.

HI John.
You wrote that story quite awhile ago, I must have missed it, great writing I was there every step of the way. Isn't it funny but all pictures from that era the blokes look the same as the ones you sailed with.
Cheers Des
