The Northern Star had turbine trouble from the start and this caused delays, upsetting schedules. Perhaps she could have been fixed properly but soon jet aircraft finished the long haul liner trade. Southern Cross lived on to cruise, latterly in the Caribbean.

Jet aircraft such as the 747 jumbo certainly killed off all sea travel as a means of going from one country to another.
A very pleasant way to travel but no longer suitable to the rush of today.

Sailed on the Cross and the Star. Enjoyed them both. Always wanted to see Tahiti and Fiji.
