Northern Star 1973 to 1975

I am helping a lady who has mesothelioma - an asbestos disease. She was on Northern Star as a waitress on the following dates:

15.6 73-13.7.73
29.7 73-23.9.73
4.10.73-2.11.73
3.11.73-6.2.74
3.3.74-10.5.74
19.6.74-7.7.74
8.7.74-31.10.74
5.11.74-27.1.75
14.2.75-15.5.75
4.6.75-13.7.75
25.7.75-2.11.75

Can anyone help by telling of conditions on the ship at that time - asbestos etc

The issue of this disease caused by asbetos came up last year and one of the lads knew where to find information on how to go about finding out if you can clkaim compensation. Problem is that like most other shipping companies Shaw Savill has I believe now gone, finding someone to sue may be difficult, but I am sure at that time there would have been more than enough asbestos and other nasties on many ships.

hi, i was also in the merchant navy in the 60 and returned to my trade after.
I am a heating engineer and worked for large companies building big boiler houses and had a lot of contact with asbestos.
the company would have an insurance policy and there would be money within the policy even if the company went broke or clossed to pay out any injury or bad health caused by asbestos.
the Evening Standard had an advert asking if you had worked in contact with asbestos you could claim.
so even if shaw savel has gone they would have had a insurance policy.. so find the insurance company and claim of them. i hope this is of help. steve

I was ayoung winger on NS around 73 ( Jumped ship in Aus and then deported - thats another story)

One thing i do remember was when the ship used to get searched for drugs they used to pull all the panels down in selected rooms.
I bunked in a cabin nextdoor to "candy" a TV winger - used to do a great gig in the pig if i remember well.

As said not sure iof it helps but i know our cabin was hit by the port authorities (not that we had anything etc)
