I wonder what happened to the KIWI on the top of the funnel?(Eats, roots and leaves)
Hi Martin, My father Brian Kay sailed on the Alaric from Sept 1966 when it left Glasgow to when it returned to Middleborough in Feb 1967. He was the 2nd officer and my mother also sailed on the trip as the Nurse - her name was Carol. It was his 23rd Voyage on SSL ships having also served on the following:
Taranaki - 2 trips - cadet
Runic - 1 trip
Coptic - 1 trip
Ceramic - 2 trips
Illyric - 3 trips - 3rd officer
Doric - 1 trip
Afric - 1 trip
Megantic - 2 trips
Persic - 2 trips
Alaric - 1 trip - 2nd officer
Athenic - 1 trip - this was his last trip
I am fortunate enough to have his hand written log book containing all the trips, what was carried, where they went , all dates , what was dropped off and what was picked up. It includes all the names of the officers for everysingle trip
As a funny story, I was conceived on the Alaric and thus have Alaric as my third name and looking back at the dates, the ship left Glasgow on the 26th Sept 1966 and finished the journey in Feb 1967 - I was born in July 1967, so conceived at Sea
Just a Nice Pic of her!

Hi Timothy!A nice looking ship.
I l ike your quote "As a funny story, I was conceived on the Alaric and thus have Alaric as my third name and looking back at the dates, the ship left Glasgow on the 26th Sept 1966 and finished the journey in Feb 1967 - I was born in July 1967, so conceived at Sea "
Looking in a database about the vessel,I see SS + A were originally going to name her ATTIC.Just think, one of your nicknames could have been Lofty !
(I'll get my coat !)
I have an associate called David Jones an ex lecky at sea , he tells me he was christened. On ever ship he went on as “ locker “ JS
