Re: Captains of SSGothic
Thank you Do you know any information on him I know that he was awarded the George Medal but not the ship he was on and I have a silver plated tray given to him in 1961 by the pilots of Port Philip.
I am trying to put together a story of his life. Any help most appreciated

Re: Captains of SSGothic
The Gothic was launched in the late 1940s. I was her Captain's Steward from early 1951 to 1953. The Masters during that time were WJ Williams for the one 1951 voyage followed by AV Richardson who retired from her in March 1953. In 1954 the Gothic repeated her role as Royal Yacht prior to the commissioning of the Royal Yacht Britannia.

Re: Captains of SSGothic
Hi Vernon,
No it is a separate award.
Not sure where you get the award of the Lloyd's War Medal for Bravery at Sea for chief officer Fisher though. According to my sources he didn't receive that award.
Awarded the George Medal
Kenneth Desmond Cronow Fisher,
Chief Officer,
Merchant Navy.
An officer was making a routine inspection of a trunk-way air chute, a compartment measuring approximately Two feet square and extending from top to bottom of the ship. Gas had, however, accumulated in the trunk-way
and he suddenly collapsed at the foot of the shaft. The alarm was immediately given and two shore carpenters, who were working on board, at once went to render assistance. They did not suspect gas and one of them was
overcome by the fumes as he was descending the trunk-way and collapsed at the bottom of the shaft. The other man, seeing his companion fall, returned to the deck to obtain further assistance. The Chief Officer
Was informed and he promptly gave instructions for the fans to be started for circulating cold air through the trunk-way. He saw, however, that both men at the bottom of the shaft were in grave danger, and he immediately descended. Although he was wearing a gas mask, he found difficulty in breathing and, as the mask was not effective, he removed it. Mr. Fisher succeeded in getting ropes around the two men who were then hoisted to the deck.
He had great difficulty in the small confined space as the men had to be manoeuvred so that they were hoisted Vertically up the narrow shaft. Although he knew that the concentration of gas was very heavy and that his gas
Mask might not be effective, Chief Officer Fisher unhesitatingly went down the trunk-way before the fans were Started to clear the gas. He was very seriously affected and had difficulty in gaining the deck. By his prompt action, great courage and total disregard of self he rescued the two men. Unfortunately one of them succumbed shortly afterwards.
Regards
Hugh
