#11... Hugh maybe you can enlighten me , which I should have made enquiries about a long time ago but circumstances were a bit tangled at the time. Query 1. Under what circumstances in peace time is the Lloyds medal awarded. And 2 is it possible to get a list of anything in the way of awards via Lloyd’s that may have been awarded in April 1991. At that particular time 4 members of my own ex crew plus other people were otherwise engaged. I only made one enquiry and asked where the other 4 members were and have faint recollections of someone saying they were visiting Lloyd’s in London. Whether this was for any specific reason I have no idea. But as say at the time the brain wasn’t in gear. It would be nice to know though late as it is. Even if it was just for tea and tabnabs. At that time also I was away at sea most of the time accumulating the money for air fares etc to Australia leaving the UK 6 Months later. So was mostly otherwise engaged.For some reason I surmised they were receiving some parchments is this a possibility .?? Regards JWS.

There are a few versions of the Lloyd's medal over the years but for the time period you are interested in we are looking at the Lloyd's Medal for Saving Life at Sea & Lloyd's Medal for Meritorious Services.
The primary reference book is Jim Gawler, Lloyd's Medals, 1836 - 1989 - I note that is just outside your time frame of 1991.

These medal records were held at the Guildhall Library in London but this, I believe, has now closed or their collection has been transferred to the London Metropolitan Archives so I think you would need to contact them with regard to the medals issued in 1991. There contact details as follows:

Thanks Hugh. The actual incident for them would have been july1988 but due to all the malarkey going on all the awards that were given out May have been dated for the occurrence as would probably state what they were for. I lost contact with the four in question, the other 4 am aware of their circumstances up until i left the uk. I have never seen a Lloyd’s scroll but would imagine it states what it is for and the date of occurrence unlike most medals. Thanks for the info. Regards JS

Lloyds Silver War Medal for Bravery at Sea. I think the word,'War' is a clue. It was only ever awarded to Merchant Seamen regardless of rank.
It came in the post.
There was a citation in Lloyds Gazette.
No Certificate/scroll.
My Dad was not 'allowed' to wear it because it was not a Crown medal. He valued it more than the D.S.C. because it was a MN medal. It is impossible to get a miniature of a Lloyds medal.

Lloyds War Medal for Bravery at Sea
Captain William Joseph Hartley, Master
The Ships took part in a North Russian Convoy which was attacked by submarines, and later by enemy aircraft with torpedoes and bombs.
Throughout the numerous fierce attacks over a period of five days, the fortitude, courage and seamanship of Captain Hartley were of the highest order. His skilful conning saved the vessel on several occasions from being hit.
During one attack he took his ship to the rescue of survivors from a burning vessel. the ships' guns destroyed one enemy aircraft and damaged others.

In May 1943 on Atlantic Convoy ONS 7 the British Ship AYMERIC was torpedoed and COPELAND went to her assistance. It was a very difficult rescue with burning oil on the water and rough weather. There were 53 dead and 25 survivors. 6 died from exposure on board COPELAND. The crew were jumping on rafts and bending on lines to haul the survivors on board. Dad recommended his Bosun, William Moffat for the Lloyds War Medal.

I never mentioned Lloyd's War Medal for Bravery at Sea as John was specifically asking about the 1990s.
I have listings of all Lloyd's War Medals for Bravery at Sea as well as all awards to the wartime Merchant Navy if anyone needs a look-up.
