Hello Hunter. My name is Duncan Megson (Scamp), I was Chief Cook\Baker. Thanks for your post, it brought back many memories of the NZ runners when I recognized the name Ernie Coffle. I sailed with Ernie on the Wild boats, I was on the Marlin, the Flamingo, Grebe, Gannet and the Wild Cormorant between 75 to 90. Those NZ trips tended to flow into one another after a while. Also did the Kiwi coast on the Port Launceston and Port Alfred.
The last time I saw Ernie he was living in Sydney and making babies like he was intending to crew the QE2. He told me then that he was thinking about moving his family back to NZ but don't know whether he did or not. Top guy, thanks again for digging up the memory. Words like 'ring bolt, shore side bosun, sly grogging, ship molls and go-ashores spring to mind.
Other names, even legends of that era:- Ginger and Tommy Montgomery, John (Hindu) Taylor, Froggy Martin, Trent Rudd, Mick Brodie, Steve (Belly) Bowman, Graham Knight, Arwyn Lloyd, Mad Arther, Johnie Kieff, Alan Solly, Chris (Bacon) Ryan, Danny Rogers to name but a few. Great guys, Great times, Great memories. All the best, Scamp in Aussie Gold Coast.
