Hi Colin,
Yes tis I, sorry to be so long in replying too busy in this retirement lark. We had some good times on the Waiwera eh? I went from her to the Canopic when it was sold to the Greeks whilst it was laid up on the Tyne. I remember that when you and i were on the Majestic in Avonmouth we came back from an overnight excursion to somewhere and one of the jennies had seized. I did 2 years on her and joined the Amalric in Auckkand did 1 trip swallowed the anchor to get married. I went to the S.S.A. Society reunion in Edinburgh in2009 They are a little more formal than ours in the antipodes. Our next reunion is in Picton in 2012.
Good to catch up with you.
Cheers,
Ian Robertson (Barney)
I was 4th Eng on the Cretic which was with the Waiwera at Swans at that time. Had many a good drinking session with the boys off the Waiwera in the Ship in the Hole. Some of her engineers came to our wedding. Perhaps we may have had a drink together.
Hello William,
Seems we were on the same ships albeit at slightly different times. My first ship as Eng Cdt was the Darro in Victoria Docks, London October '73, then Illyric in March '74 (joined in Liverpool). Then as J/E the Amalric (August '75 to May '76) followed by short trips on Illyric and Icenic before another 5 month run on the Illyric in '77.
You may have sailed with a cadet called Malcolm Johnson on the Drina or Durango? He was a tall chap with dark hair from Essex and one of the three SS&A Eng Cadets at Poplar Tech for the 1971 intake.
