    WSL Gothic 1893-1926
Built by Harland and Wolff for the White Star Line in 1893, Gothic worked the London to New Zealand run. After catching on fire and getting beached in 1906, she was repaired, converted to an immigrant ship, and transferred to the Red Star Line with the new name of Gothland. In 1911 she was transferred back to the White Star Line and renamed Gothic once again. After 3 years on the New Zealand run she went back to Red Star and again becomes Gothland. Now working the Antwerp to New New York run, Gothic became stranded on a rock formation in 1925. She was pulled out successfully but was scrapped the following year in 1926.

PS Is this the same Gothic in question??

    Default Gothic:

    A later Gothic ?

On August 2, 1968, having left New Zealand several days earlier, Gothic suffered a devastating fire onboard. The crew were valiant and extinguished fire. Sadly seven lives were lost and the ship suffered considerable damage. She had to make it back to Wellington in bad weather conditions.

    Default gothic

seems to have been an unlucky name, 2 Gothics both suffered fires, another strange coinsidence 2 ships named Mahratta, Brocklebanl line i think, both went aground on the Goodwin Sands off Deal in Kent, years apart about 1 mile from each other and were total losses,

    Default Gothic's:

    As Doc reports:

An SS Gothic was an ocean liner, built in 1893 at the Harland and Wolff Shipyards for the White Star Line. She traveled the London to New Zealand route. Gothic caught fire in 1906, and was subsequently repaired. Following this, she was converted into an immigrant ship and chartered to the Red Star Line as SS Gothland. This was short-lived, as in 1911, she was transferred back to White Star with her name returned to Gothic. Three years later, she once again served the Red Star Line as Gothland. She now ran the Antwerp to New New York run. On said route, Gothic ran aground on a rock formation in 1925. She was successfully pulled free from the rocks the following year, but was sent to the ship breakers instead of returning to service.

SS. Gothic 1947: a British cargo liner in service from 1948 to at least 1958.

SS Gothic was a cargo liner launched in 1947. She was the fourth and final of the Corinthic class liners ordered by the Shaw, Savill & Albion Steamship Co. in 1946—her sister ships being SS Corinthic, SS Athenic and SS Ceramic.

The SS Gothic, built by Swan Hunter, Wallsend-on-Tyne (yard 1759), would become the most famed as she would become the Royal Yacht in 1952-53. She was launched on December 12, 1947, completed in December 1948, and departed on her maiden voyage on December 23, 1948, sailing from Liverpool to Sydney.

REMEMBRANCE PLAQUE Halliday- St.Andrews Church Plimmerton NZ.jpg

    The Story

'The Hallidays and Holmans were both English immigrant families living on Motuhara Road. In July 1968 the Halliday family set off on the SS Gothic to visit family in England. The Gothic was the former Royal yacht used on the 1953-4 Royal Tour of New Zealand. On August 1, several days after leaving New Zealand, the Gothic suffered a devastating fire. The Halliday family’s cabin was on the deck above the paint store which fuelled the intense fire. The valiant crew extinguished the fire but sadly seven lives, including all four of the Halliday family, were lost and the ship suffered considerable damage.
When the Gothic was scrapped a propeller was removed and taken to Britain. A plaque was made from it and presented by Shaw Savill to St Andrew’s church with a moving ceremony.
While the Halliday family were away the family dog was cared for by the Holman family. John Holman, who was awarded the George Medal for his bravery at the Tangiwai rail disaster of 1953, was a member of the Plimmerton Volunteer Fire Brigade. John continued to look after the dog and so for years it was a tangible reminder of the Halliday family to the people of Plimmerton. For many years following the tragedy, Halliday family members in England sent money for flowers for St Andrew’s at Christmas. '

Two other passengers and the ship's 2nd Electrician lost their lives in the tragedy....

SS. Gothic 1947: a British cargo liner in service from 1948
The Gothic was used as a Royal Yacht in 1953/54 for a tour of the Colonies by the new Queen Elizabeth.
I was offered a job on her in November 1953 in the Liverpool `POOL`
A load of us in the Pool turned it down as it would have been like being in the Royal Navy.
I went on the New Zealand Star instead and saw the Giothic several times in New Zealand.
    Cheers
