Gothic
I am saddened to read about the fate of the "Gothic" and the people who lost thier lives. I am surprised not to have heard about this before now as I have posted anecdotes regarding this fine vessel before on this site.
As an A/S aboard her 1958/9 I only have happy memories. She was a beauty. A "happy " ship, a good feeder. We used to play what we called deck croquet next to number 3 hatch. A number of circles roughly 5" in diameter were painted on the deck and equiped with a long handled mallet the idea was to knock a wooden puck into the rings. As the ship was a steady sailer with a minimum amount of pitch and roll it was amazing to see how adept we all became.

Gothic, Suva & Auckland.
This thread brings back some memories, I was on my 3rd trip out of Four on the "Port Adelaide" first of all we called at Suva a couple of days before the Queen was due to arrive, saw all the locals preparing for all the celebrations, we got told off for setting off chinese crackers on a Sunday. We then sailed for Auckland just before she arrived. It was quite a sight when "Gothic" arrived in Auckland, dressed overall with bunting and flags, also the hull was painted white instead of her usual black. Was able to see the Queen for my first time when she went to the cinema to see the premier of "A Million Pound Note" with Gregory Peck. Quite an experience.

gothic.
no mate 1926 I think would be too old for anyone to answer as a crewman .
the gothic I talk of was the ex queens yacht built in 1946 I believe and the tragic
night I refer to was in 1968, she did one more trip and was scrapped in 1969 or
at least no longer sailed under the British Flag.
a great ship from a great era. regards tony.

Re: gothic.
Just Logged on and have got to go out today but in the meantime here is a link and I was sailing out of Melbourne in 1969 when I got the shock of my life seeing the damaged Gothic tied up but on her way to the shipbreakers in Japan. I was skippers tiger on Gothic for two and a half years.

Re: gothic.
Got a bit mixed up with my ships on #14. after having a proper look at my discharge book realised
I was on the "Port Napier" not the "Port Adelaide" when I was in Suva and Auckland at the start of the
Queen's Royal tour, in fact I was on the "Adelaide" outward bound to Oz when King George VI died on Feb 6th 1952.
which was my Mothers birthday, a couple of trips later still on the "Adelaide" was homeward going through
Suez, June 2nd 1953 listening to the Coronation on the radio. Fred.

Re: gothic.
Fred, on 6th February 1952 I was on the Gothic in Mombasa (link in #18 above has photos at Mombasa and photos of Suva Royal Tour in the 60s). Ten years later on 7th February 1962 my daughter was born in Suva.

From Australia or New Zealand, but I do remember some of the tragic stories that circulated from that terrible night.
