Did anyone go to Wellesley Nautical School,blyth Northumberland !!?
And if so, did you go to sea or land on leaving

Hi Rose, yes i was at Wellesley in the late seventies, i am still at sea, well stuck in dry-dock at the moment but still at sea, i am skipper of a small survey ship, working around the UK & Europe, i enjoyed my time there & it is a shame that the local community hasn't benefited from the school's demise & the land it owned that was bequeathed to the school has found its way into greedy profiteers with no sense of heritage, history or loyalty

Hi Rose
I was also there in the mid 70s joined my first ship at tyne dock in 75. MV Sugar Carrier, 2 of us left that year, me deep sea and one las to Grimsby to join a fishing boat. I also enjoyed my time there,
Was at sea til late 82. Then helped out on TS Royalist the sea cadets tall ship and a few others, giving young lads something back.
As said above, shame the community never benifited from the school land.

#2...Skipperste... Have just noticed this post now, and on the off chance you are still around, I lived close to St. Marys Light house in Whitley Bay. Quite often passed the Wellesley Nautical establishment, but was always told it was for bad boys and never thought too much about it. Whether true or not don't know, and really is irrelevant. Also the girls dormitorys in Monkseaton who came to Byegate school where I went thought they were all bad girls, they certainly were tough enough and wouldn't cross their path if could help it. Found out in later life they were all from broken homes and not there of their own accord. The same home for the girls is now retirement apartments, so what they do with todays youngsters wouldn't have a clue, maybe just left to roam the streets, there are also no Borstals today and they wonder how we have so much strife in the community. I was at wellesley nautical sschool from 1970 - 1971 and was then a approved school. I enjoyed my time there and the traing given. When i left i wanted to join royal navy and passed all the tests given. When it come to criminal record they declined my enlistment.

Look on the bright side Billy, when joining the MN you have 100% chance of going to sea and a chance to see the world, if joining the RN you could have ended up a concrete ship in the middle of the country and never see deep water, I know a few RN who fell into that trap
