This site looks very interesting for those of us who remember the Vindi and other training ships. This one must have been something else, though not formaly a traing establishment as we knew them.

We had a well known school in Glasgow similar to the Mars it was the Buchanan Institute for Destitute Boys.
Google the name, the building still exists and has been redeveloped into flats. It overlooks Glasgow Green not far from the Nautical College on the other side of the River Clyde.
It was mixed and did cobbling, tailoring and other trades as well as seagoing.
There was a lot of these schools in Scotland, they kept boys out of the adult prison system. When I was a lad they were called reform schools. In Paisley my local reform school was called Miss Kibble's academy. They birched the boys for misbehavior. The Scottish army regiments actively recruited the boys at sixteen. They were used to discipline.

there is a very old one in london's east end called (i think) the ragged school. it picked up all types of boys & girls who were very very poor or who had no parents. the buliding is still there alongside the river lee. i don't know if it still operates as a school. alf

Yes Alf the Ragged School Museum is down there at Copperfield Road at Regents Canal in the East end. Maybe the one you are thinking of.
We had the Ragged Schools in Scotland as well. Glasgow School was at Drygate not far from Glasgow Cross. A lot of lads went from the Ragged Schools into the services including MN.
I think we could do with them now the state some of the countries children are in.

hi jimmy. yes you are right about the ragged school. i was doing a day cruise on the river lee
the cruise ship i was on was about 20 feet long and packed with elderly bloods, our lunch was sausage and mash aquired from a local pub by our steward, who had to get off the boat at the lock and go and fetch it. ( see mr strange i have been on a cruise). i used to deliver to a warehouse by glasgow green and i believe there was a type of reform school nearby. alf
