SOUTH AMERICA tanker torpedoed.
Radio Officer, Bob Cobb, sent out ,SSSS. together with the Ship's Convoy number (44) and the word ,'torpedoed'
SSSS = Submarine Attack. AAAA = Aircraft attack . QQQQ = Armed Surface Raider. SOS was not used on Convoys in Wartime. Four letters were quicker and easier to transmit.
D flag (yellow and Blue) Keep clear. I am manoeuvring with difficulty . On my desk whilst I added up the Register totals ; when teaching

Local information center put the flag upside down.
When I went in and asked if they were in distress it was obvious they did not have a clue about what I was telling them.

#14.. Those two haven’t changed Ted to the best of my knowledge.All the single flag hoists had to be committed to memory. Was only on finding an old Castrol Oil tide book 1990 that noticed some flag hoists had been altered , or would still be believing they were the same As of old. Knew however knew A was now have Divers down keep clear of me, but not a few of the others as had never need to use them. JS
