I went to work for Scotts' of Greenock and ended up in the Admiralty side of the Drawing Office. Boss said to me, ever been on a sub, me no. So we went to one of the "O" Boats that was being fitted out.
Attached to the Hull were planks (that's what it looked like), which could be lowered to the horizontal, what are these I asked, bunks, was the reply. These boards were no wider than 18 inches.
Nothing like you see on TV.

Hi Bill, seven subs out of service at one time is a big loss to the fleet, maybe they are mothballed rather than ready for the breakers yard,
if that's the case they can be recommissioned and returned to service when needed, cheers.

Hi Terry, for me that must be the very worst job in the RN, it's not what you could call a life a life at sea and makes you appreciate
what a wonderful life we had in the MN, .
In the eighties I watched a German made movie titled "Das Boot" {The Boat} it follows the story of a U Boat and it's crew during WWII,
it's a very good film and if you haven't already seen it then maybe you can find it on that device you have for finding films to watch, cheers

Have you seen any mention of their replacements Bill, it's hard to understand what is happening to our armed forces at times, for me
having two huge carriers that could be taken out quite easily wit today's weaponry, "is putting your eggs in one basket", cheers.

Hi Terry, I used to work for Honeywell in the 80s and they had a team of 6 or 7 guys we used to call minute men (here one minute gone the next) who used to disappear every now and then and you wouldn't see them for 6 months or so, they were speciallist controls engineers and used to be helcoptered onto the nuke subs when they were on patrol, once on board of course they couldn't get off until the end of the voyage.
