Somebody in the design of the Type 45 has made a very big mistake :-

taken from The Pulse 14th November 2019 :-

Half of the Royal Navy's fleet of Type 45 Destroyers are out of service - because they can't cope with the warm waters of the Gulf - Defence Secretary Ben Wallace has said. Chronic recruitment problems in the Royal Navy are also forcing some ships to remain in harbour, reports The Times - and yesterday, Mr Wallace told the defence select committee a quarter of the Royal Navy’s 76 ships are inoperable. He suggested this had prevented him from deploying the Royal Navy "to meet some of our ambitions and tasks"and said that only three of the six Daring-class destroyers - hailed by the Royal Navy as being among the most advanced warships ever built - are in service.

The Type 45s, which the Royal Navy describes as its 'backbone', need fixing "because they could not cope with warm water after problems inthe Gulf", reports The Times.Type 45 HMS Duncan has been among the Royal Navy warships that have protected UK shipping from being harassed by Iranian forces in the Gulf and the strait of Hormuz. She has now returned, and has been replaced out there by fellow 45 HMS Defender. And Type 45 HMS Dragon is currently part of the HMS Queen Elizabeth Carrier Strike Group taking part in Westlant 19, a three-month war games exercise off the coast of the USA and Canada, featuring the UK Carrier Strike Group and US allies. Sea temperatures in the part of the Atlantic where Westlant is taking place are area round 30c, the Royal Navy revealed this week. The Royal Navy says: "The Type 45 Destroyer is more than just a ship: it’s a symbol of Britain’s eminent place on the world stage and a powerful deterrent to those who would do us harm. " "It’s the embodiment of the Royal Navy’s commitment to defending the Fleet, upholding the law, and protecting our economy and way of life."

HMS DAUNTLESS was supposed to have been towed from Portsmouth to Cammell Laird in October as the first Type 45 destroyer to have new engines inserted. CL have been sub-contracted by BAE Systems to cut open the hull and perform the heavy engineering tasks. Speaking to CL at DSEI in September, they said they are very much ready to start work but are waiting on BAE. HMS DAUNTLESS has not been to sea since 2015 and her refit has already been going on for two years while HMS DARING remains laid up for lack of manpower.

    hhhhmmmm ........................... what a mess !!!!!!!!!!

Wheñ the type 45's were at the design stage Bae System proposed to use a proven design of heat recovery, a design that a proven history. Geff Hoon the Minister for Defence got involved and insisted that the Rolls Royce system be used. The RR system was unproven Hoon was adamant that his choice of system was to be used.
Now because of Political involvement all six are to have an additional diesel generator fitted.
Initial choice may have saved penni's, but more costly in the long run.

The Chinese are reputed to have a sub that can do 60 knots under water, we know they have a rail gun that can fire more cannon shots a minute than any other gun, but where does all this get us, just a waste of resources. These days Govt's don't need spies, they can just read the military journals and watch TV.
I will send you a cake with a file in it John.
