    Default Trafalgar Day

    HM Naval Base Portsmouth

The 214th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar was marked with a ceremony on board HMS Victory, the flagship of Admiral Lord Nelson today (Monday 21 October).

The annual Trafalgar Day ceremony commemorates a battle that changed the course of our history as a nation and sealed British dominion of the seas for a hundred years.

Puts me in mind of the ex-RN OIM of a certain N. Sea platform who demanded that vessels visiting on Trafalgar Day should 'dress overall'. He was most put out when the Skippers made certain suggestions that were mostly anatomically improbable.
The same OIM, when a vessel fitted with fire-fighting monitors appeared on the scene, requested a demonstration of their efficiency by washing down the platform's modules. The Skipper demurred, pointing out that the monitors were very powerful but the OIM insisted. As the monitor jets hit the module cladding, sections of it were blown off leading to horrified cries from the OIM to desist. He never asked for a demonstration again.
