#9... on my mothers side of the family there are various Hoods in the family tree. Who knows as well as my Aunt fantazising that she was related to Mary Queen of Scots, we may have relations who were battleships. JWS.

To JWS, with a line of ancestors such as Hood's with their battleships and Douglas's with their battle-axes, your mother had quite a distinguished pedigree.

That may be Fouro but which Douglas Clan was it ? I suspect the Black Douglas”s. JS

Three ships of the Royal Navy have been named HMS Hood after several members of the Hood family, who were notable Navy officers: HMS Hood (1859) was a 91-gun second-rate ship of the line, originally laid down as HMS Edgar, but renamed in 1848 and launched in 1859.

She looks in good condition considering what happened to her.
What remains of here that is, to think she was blasted by all the ammunition on board the remaining pieces have not been that corroded by the sea.

I travelled down to Portsmouth Dockyard museum just after the bell that was raised from HMS Hood was on display, at that time as part of the Battle of Jutland exhibition.
Very moving experience and I hope next time I visit they have found a more appropriate display area for it.

Looking back at some of these old posts makes one wonder how important today are bells and gongs , even in a period of 5 years so much can change .Only the younger members can keep us up to date . Also be interesting to find how the crewing numbers are going , even minor labour jobs such as ringing bells and beating gongs requires manpower . JS

Under colregs it is still a requirement to carry a ships bell that conforms to certain criteria, also a gong or similar if over a certain length.
Nowadays I'm pretty certain that the gong can/has been replaced by an electronic system to provide the noise u the gong but certain the requirements for carriage of a ships bell that conforms to standard criteria is still a requirement.

A much more recent post on a recent collision might fit in with this post on the HMS Hoods ships bell showing how important the old ways are/were before electronic gizmos of getting around appeared on the scenes. JS
