Help with WW1 Records
I have downloaded my great grandads records and I am trying to understand them. They are so very difficult to read!! On the first of them it has that he was on 'Victory P'. Is the HMS Victory as in Nelsons ship or the yard it was in? I am confused as to where he was when he wasnt on HMS Royalist. I know by the records that he was in the Battle of Jutland in May 1916 but can anyone tell me what it says in the comments ' xx in action'? Also is the stamp just to say he is RNR or for something else? So many questions already and I still have 4 more records to go though . lol Any help would really be appreciated.

Re: Help with WW1 Records
Apparently, there were 4 Victory divisions based in Portsmouth during the GW.
HMS Victory - Flagship Portsmouth & barracks 1840 - 1974
HMS Victory II - Crystal Palace - Training depot RN Divs 1914-19
HMS Victory III - Portsmouth Accounting Sec 1914-17
HMS Victory IV - London/Portsmouth/Petersfield RNR 1914-17
HMS Victory VI - Crystal Palace depot for RNR & RN Divs 1914-19
HMS Victory VII - Portland auxiliary patrol depot 1915
HMS Victory IX - Reserves Portsmouth 1915-16
HMS Victory X - Portsmouth accounting section 1917-19
Possibly P just means Portsmouth ?
Keith.

Re: Help with WW1 Records
Yeah, I thought the 'P' would just mean Portsmouth. So it would be the barracks then? Thats what I was thinking but cant really find anything online regards to photos or info about the barracks. Thanks for your help Keith.

Re: Help with WW1 Records
Thanks for all the help so far. It would be great if Hugh could help me further. I have been researching the battle of Jutland but I am starting to go cross eyed with it! I know Samuel was with the RNR for 25 years mostly on trawlers he trained as a fireman after the war. I am finding it all fascinating but the handwriting is sometimes just illegible.

Re: Help with WW1 Records
Hello Marie,
HMS VICTORY was the RN barracks in Portsmouth.
He was awarded his 1st good conduct badge 9.12.1917. He also received 1915/1916/1917/1918 chevrons.
According to the record you posted he was aboard HMS ROYALIST from 1915 - 1919.
It is difficult to make out the comment but I think it says: 'present in action off Jutland'.
If he did 25 years service in the RNR he will have 5 records, if they have survived, as each record covers off 5 years RNR service.
Regards
Hugh
