Default BAE shipbuilders and the Royal Navy's new ships

I thought this was particularly interesting given the parlous state of the U.K. ship building industry.
Bringing a bit of commercial nous into the building of new warships could hopefully bring them in on time and on budget if the builders can stop the M.O.D. from putting their sticky fingers in everywhere and constantly changing the design, fitment, colour of bulkheads etc.

john, trouble is there are only three years in the UK capable of building warships, two on the Clyde and one at Barrow. Barrow is a specialist submarine supplier/ builder.
The two major yards Ferguson's, Clyde and Cammell Laird, Mersey. Neither of these yards has the knowledge, experience of building warships.
I agree that as country we should not have all our eggs in one basket.
    Regards
    Vic

#2, I will probably get shot down here Vic, but if the Government is serious about the UK being more independent of the
EU and looking for world trade would it not make sense to regenerate a couple of the old yards in preparation for the future,
    Cheers. JC

John, all the old yards are now house or shoppin malls.
Rosyth is not building yard, more of an assembly facility, sections brought in a joined by them. Still a lot of workers travel to Rosyth from Clyde site

#4, I know that a lot of Sturgeons SNP backers come from Glasgow Marian but I can't believe they won't take this situation
into consideration if she calls another independent referendum, cheers JC

I stopped my contracts with the M O D because everytime you had a visit you had a different official who wanted something changed from the agreed written specs, they were a bluddy nightmare, but because they were the M O D they expected you to be grateful and do all the extra work and modifications for nothing, plus the fact you had to wait 9 -12 months for your money, so you were financing them as well.

I decided that having the kudos of 'authorised supplier' would put me out of business and I sailed into the sunset.

As regards colour schemes Ivan, you"d be surprised as I was, how much emphasis the trick cyclists put on this. At a seminar I attended in London at a posh hotel attended by the MOT various shipowners and a few ships personnel a subject discussed for about an hour among many others was the colour scheme in cabins, as the trick cyclists reckon it was a big factor re the mental health of the occupant. This was in the seventies. Don't think much was done about it though as still got the same amount of those wanting to do self harm to themselves and others. JS

There is a division of BAE here in Melbourne, but now it sits idle. The last ship they did was only half a ship, the carcase came from Spain and was only fitted out here.
There is talk of a number of patrol boats being built there but to date no evidence oif such.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

Maybe they should get the crews first then build the ships to suit. I cant see the RN ever getting the proper manning requirements for ever again building up its strength to what it should be. The chances of ever building up the manning of British manned merchant ships is dead in the water. Any youngster today who thinks that they will have an adventurous life is sadly disillusioned when he sees what the MN fleet consists of today. We have had them on here full of hope, some have come back and are on the likes of stand by and anchor handling and supply vessels in the North sea. This is just gut wrenching labour at times. Is a bit easier today due to labour saving devises but is a means of earning a living and are probably easier ways ashore. The few who do remain are never going to be the many that there were in past years and no longer will appeal as a vocation. However we all live in hope. JS
