When I served [mid 70 - mid 80s] uniform wasn't allowed to be worn ashore due to the security situation in NI/UK mainland. As far as I am aware it has never really been relaxed or encouraged since then.

Here in Oz the only place you will see anyone in uniform is at parades or similar. An order banning the wearing in public at other times came about just after 9/11 as they would be seen as a target. Why don't we put the polis in uniform?????
    Happy daze John in Oz.

    Default Pub named Waterloo:

Pub named after a hero of the Battle of Waterloo refuses to serve Navy sailors wearing their uniform moments after they celebrated being given Freedom of the City:

Crew of HMS Edinburgh had been given the Freedom of the City
Around 250 officers cheered as they marched through Scottish capital
Later kicked out of Ensign Ewart pub - named after a hero of the Battle of Waterloo - because they were in military dress

Pub claims licensing regulations prevent them serving people in uniform

The City of Edinburgh RNA with West Lothian RNA, entertained 25 Senior Rates from Hms Edinburgh on the Saturday evening, at the Central Branch RBL, a great time was had by all, sadly I over indulged, and a liquid induced lack of gravity incident occurred ( I fell over) resulting in me having to attend a minor accident unit in the Western hospital to have my head repaired, making me miss the invite to Sunday Lunch on Hms Edinburgh. To say there is no fool like an old fool is a understatement

Default How do you scrap an aircraft carrier?

Who, what, why: (NOT A QUIZ) How do you scrap an aircraft carrier?

The Royal Navy's former flagship, HMS Ark Royal, is to be towed to a breakers' yard in Turkey. But how exactly do you scrap an aircraft carrier?

There were schemes that offered a future of sorts to the Ark Royal - a proposal to sink it and turn it into a diving site off Torbay, a suggestion that it should become a floating casino off Hong Kong and a plan to turn it into a heliport for London.

But on Monday hundreds of people are expected to gather as the 690ft (210m) ship leaves Portsmouth for the last time.
