    Default merchant navy ranks

Without appearing too pedantic, the title captain on a merchant ship is also purely a complimentary title, as this is a military rank, and unless holding the Queens Commission have no legal right to call this. This I suppose applies to foreign armed forces without a Monarchy and must give an oath of allegiance to the head of state. The correct title is master when referring to a merchant vessel. When one reads books re. the R.N. especially about Nelsons time the title Sailing master appears quite frequently so expect little was done by naval officers re the actual working of vessel. I may be wrong about this maybe some of the people on this net may have made a study of the subject, but that is the way I read the little I have read on the matter. Best Regards John Sabourn.
