Did the run often on Houlder's Meat Boats and often in dock with one of the "A" boats. Was in the British Hospital with one of the Baggage Masters who had fallen down a hatch(I think) can't remember which "A" boat though.

Did my first trip to sea on the Paraguay Star in 61 as Jnr Engineer.
Some voyage for a first tripper to South America.
I have the original painting of the Paraguay Star.

Yep! I was on the Essiquibo and the Darro on the BA meat run, both rubbish ships. Only good thing was the overtime and pay-off day.

What does the A boat run mean? I sailed on the Escalante in 65. Picked her up in the Vic dock, signed off in Liverpool. Short trip to B.A. etc. Cheers, Colin.K.

The A boat run: London, Vigo, Lisbon, Las Palmas, Rio de Janeiro, Santos, Montevideo, and best of all Buenos Aires.

Truth be known I would be happy to do that run again on any of them... as I sit here looking at a large cowhide that Mario, the leather king in Montevideo, persuaded me to buy . First trip and all agog, sheep skins and a jacket as well!
As for BA ...a steak in La Estancia somewhere along La Viaje finishing off with a couple beers in the Old Texas or was it the New Texas on Veinte Cinqo de Mayo. Actually a few runs ashore like that now, would probably finish me off.

Yes, I did two BA runs and they were great for overtime and runs ashore. Shame about the ships though. I was on the Royal Mail "Darro" and "Essiquibo" with the "Darro" being named as "Ship of the Year" by the shipbreakers. The winches blew up as we tried to get alongside in the Royal Docks in London. Best ship on the BA run was Donaldson's "Cortona".
