I was Bakers boy on Aragon May/June 66; Anyone remember the Chief Baker, tall grey haired oldish (in 1966)?

The only ship I did not enjoy.
Mainly because the chief baker was an a**ehole.
An Irishman at that. Hard to believe!!

sailed in drina,well painted ship,big whinge breakfast time,ab fronts cook,says i can read the paper thro bacon,cooks reply ,come from skinny pigs,not a bad trip,paddy got a nice yellow bird canary,sang happly,till we sailed from las palmas,not a sound out of it till back at las palmas on the way home weeks later,plenty of cheap rum to,alas i was just a j.o.s,not used to such habits,nose is growing.

Loved B.A., back in the 50's sailing on the Highland boats. The Brigade, the Princess and the Chieftan. ( Never did do a trip on the Monarch ).

Going ashore was always an hour or two in the Ritiro Park fun fare. The guy in the ticket offfice, was magic at rolling peso notes through his fingers so he could count several notes twice. Really clever. Once twigged we had to count the cash back to him and he'd grin and make it right.

A couple of hours in the funfair and then off to Vente Cinco de Mayo for the rest of the night.. To the Lightship, The Light House, The Old Inn, The Texas Bar, the Mogambo, The London American, etc. I especially remember sprinting from bar to bar downing a free drink in each one as all the ships in harbour blasted in the new year. With a clear run you could down 4 or 5 free ones before they'd all finished.

Those were the days my friends.

I see in todays paper that that woman President has her people harrassing British Cruise Ships and tourists and anyone who has called at the Falklands.
No Problem, if tourist ships full of passengers did not call anymore the only peopl;e who would suffer are the Argentinos whose livelyhoods depend on the tourist trade. How daft is that.

There is nowt in BA today, Viente Cinco de Mayo is just a long street full of offices, shops , banks. NO BARS. ALL GONE.
I walked all around BA a couple of years ago, the only place to have a drink was in the Hotel.
All the young ladies , ALL GONE.
Every Thursday afternoon in the Plaza facing the Pink Palace all the Widows and relatives of the 15,000 deschemisados, [ the shirtless ones, peasants] who were killed by the junta, assemble and stand in silence, They are surrounded by the Militia, thousands of them, with all kinds of weapons, not Vigilantes anymore.
here is a photo of a small section of them, They do not like to be photographed, or else.
So BA is not worth going to anymore. Keep the memories.
