Dave mate you would always look for the church steeple cos there would be a pub close by. As for mission, I thought that was a position?

    Hi Pete,
You and I must have been around at the same time. Can't say I have such fond memories of 'Jesus' O'Keefe though. Kind to sailors but a bully with cadets. You can guess I was one of the latter.

As I recall, Doris's Bar was affectionately known as the Royal Mail Officers Club to some of us who visited there.

I know this is a deviation from the current thread, but if we are talking infamous bars here's another one. Does anyone remember the Texas bar and the Arizona bar in Lisbon? Phew, it brings me out in a sweat just thinking about them

Mine too Richard! First trip cadet on the Albany, after a hard night in Doris', woke up somewhere in Kingston remembering that the ship was due to sail at 0600. Panic stations. Ran through the streets to the Royal Mail pier with encouraging shouts of "run, man, run" from the locals. Got to the ship to find everyone at stations, Captain Ratcliff, Mate Ian Park and the Pilot on the bridge. Shore leave stopped for the rest of the trip, but forgotten about one port later.
