#1 John I think of a few disputes of years gone by that never reached the public era. Anyone up for certificates will know the various questions asked in the shipmasters business of the late 50s and early 60s, after that I never was a great scholar as looking up such rules and regulations, the question was what is the maxinum allotment a seaman is allowed to leave to his family ? I am sure no shipowner ever followed this ruling or he wouldn’t have got a crew, but the answer was 50% of his basic pay. So a seaman on 32 pounds per calendar month , not including his overtime etc. then he could stipulate that the maximum that he could leave was 16 pounds a month , slightly less than 4 pounds a week and this was in 1963 , however I never heard of it being enforced but the shipowner had that in his favour and the use of your money for longer than you had. Today with salary’s going directly into a bank in total every month , he has lost that stick to Wield,JS……..
