    from The Guardian

One in 20 British adults do not believe the Holocaust happened, and 8% say that the scale of the genocide has been exaggerated, according to a poll marking Holocaust Memorial Day.

Almost half of those questioned said they did not know how many Jews were murdered in the Holocaust, and one in five grossly underestimated the number, saying that fewer than two million were killed. At least six million Jews died.

The poll, commissioned by the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust, a charity established and funded by the UK government to promote and support the international day of remembrance, echoes the findings of a survey carried out in seven European countries in November.

That poll found that one in three people knew little or nothing about the Holocaust, and an average of 5% said they had never heard of it. In France, 20% of those aged 18-34 said they had never heard of the Holocaust; in Austria, the figure was 12%. A survey in the US last year found that 9% of millennials said they had not heard, or did not think they had heard, of the Holocaust.

The scale of ignorance about the Holocaust has shocked experts. Olivia Marks-Woldman, of the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust, said: “I must stress that I don’t think [the poll respondents] are active Holocaust deniers – people who deliberately propagate and disseminate vile distortions. But their ignorance means they are susceptible to myths and distortions.” The Holocaust is taught in schools as part of the history curriculum, but “that might only be one lesson”, she added. “And people who are middle-aged or over may never have been taught about it.”

Steven Frank, who was one of only 93 children to survive the Theresienstadt camp, said: “I find these figures terribly worrying. In my experience, people don’t have a solid understanding of what happened during the Holocaust and that’s one reason I’m so committed to sharing what happened to me.

“At one of my talks, I met someone who said the Holocaust didn’t happen. The only way to fight this kind of denial and antisemitism is with the truth – I tell people what happened, what I saw and experienced. If we ignore the past, I fear history will repeat itself.”

Education was vital in the fight against ignorance and hate, said Karen Pollock of the Holocaust Educational Trust. “One person questioning the truth of the Holocaust is one too many, and so it is up to us to redouble our efforts to ensure future generations know that it did happen and become witnesses to one of the darkest episodes in our history.”

The trust’s poll also found that 83% of those questioned said it was important to know about the Holocaust, and 76% believed more needs to be done to educate people.

Holocaust Memorial Day will be marked by a national commemorative event in central London on Sunday, attended by senior politicians, faith leaders and survivors. More than 11,000 activities and events are planned across the UK.

Yesterday Rachel Riley, the Countdown presenter, said she was to be given extra security on the show after receiving online abuse over her comments on antisemitism in the Labour party. The mathematician, who is Jewish, told the Times: “With the hashtag Get The Tories Out or the red rose or hashtag JC4PM, they say to me: ‘You’re only calling out the left’. Well, I’ve been attacked by people on the left and the best way to not have me talk about antisemitism on the left is not to be antisemitic.”

The remembrance day will also mark the 25th anniversary of the Rwandan genocide, which began in April 1994, and 40th anniversary of the Cambodia genocide’s end. Moshe Kantor, president of the European Jewish Congress, said: “As each year the number of Holocaust survivors able to share their personal testimony diminishes, our responsibility to honour their experience, to educate the uninitiated grows ever greater if we are to ensure that Jews can live as safely as all other European citizens.

“On 27 January, the world will unite to remember all the victims of the Holocaust – let their voices give us the call to action we need to work together, united, to ensure the future of the Europe we know.”

On this day in 1945, the Liberation of Auschwitz took place. In relation to the 2018 summer exhibit INNOCENT EYES, there is a post video clip of the Liberation at the link below.

There should never be a point where we have to say the past is the past and to simply forget.

As the Holocaust moves from living history, it is important that we take the time to remember the victims and pay tribute to the incredible survivors. The Holocaust did not start with violence, but venomous words. It is vital to educate the young on the lessons learnt from the past and their contemporary relevance, so that we can say never again.

I found the figures of the people who are in denial of the Holocaust actually quite revolting as well as the figures regarding the belief that the numbers cruelly put to death as being exaggerated I don't know what history is taught in schools I believe from my grandchildren but they concentrate on the Victorian era and WWI but I think there are some basic facts that every child should learn I think there is an underlying thread of anti-semitism which I strongly believe is brought around by Palestinian politics

The Holocaust is today part of every child’s formal education in England. The principal way in which children will learn about the Holocaust is through the National Curriculum for History.

A false piece about UK schools reportedly dropping the subject of the Holocaust from history classes began circulating via e-mail in mid-April 2007:

Unfortunately both of our local secondary schools in this area tend to be academies and therefore don't cover the key stage 3 history syllabus so you can see where there's a great big hole in the teaching

    Thankfully, some know.

MORE THAN 100 pupils, residents and councillors gathered in tribute to those who died in the Holocaust.

This is now a global problem where history which should be taught, we do not want it to occur again, is not.
Too many of the "green' and do good brigade control what is taught and what is not.

On the matter of the law.
A well known local ex footballer caught two lads with skate boards attempting to Graffiti the outside of the apartment block where he lives.

He caught them, took the skater boards from them and made them scrub the Graffiti off while he waited for the Police to come.
The cop said well done mate, but another resident who saw the incident says he should be charged as he took the law in to his own hands.
How ever the police have now confirmed he has done nothing wrong.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

In the time that I was waiting to start college back in the 1960s I went to work in a local brickyard it gave me a few quid to buy an old car when I went to college . One of the lorry drivers was a German ex Luftwaffe and an ex prisoner of war at the well-known Swanwick prisoner of war camp which was just a few miles away he had been working in farmers' fields and actually ended up marrying the Farmer's Daughter which I believe was not an easy thing to do for a German prisoner of war .

As a naive 16 / 17 year old I asked him if he had been a member of the National socialist party he said no but he had joined up because they knew that you either obeyed or there was something very unpleasant awaiting you he said they didn't know about the concentration camps but they did know that you complied or something very very nasty happened I'm in talking to him about the war he was explaining to me how the reparations to France had crippled post-war Germany and that there inflation and everything else and open the People's mind to the National socialist party and in his opinion and I have read a lot of history since the errors of reparations insisted on particularly by the French had been the root cause along with the worldwide economic recession of the rise of the National socialists I thought it was very interesting to hear the other man's point of view but could never understand why the punitive reparations had been put there in the first place obviously other punishment but that punishment did, so sadly go wrong. World War II resulted from it

if we don't learn that in history how will we ever stop the rise of dictators and the crazed egotists . So in the light of Keith kindly checking the school that 4 of my 7 grandchildren of attended one still being there( ( a little intrusive , but never mind ) I checked with three of the girls yesterday if they knew what the Holocaust was remembering that the Portsmouth News implies that they all must know because they were taught it well none of the three of them did history when they selected their courses so none of them are actually taking advantage of learning about the Holocaust and because of that none of the three that I spoke to wear actually sure what it was despite what the Portsmouth News says , and I didn't open the article because they wanted all kind of registration filled in and it took me almost a year to get rid of the Portsmouth News telesales last time as I had dealings with them I'm not as accurate as they may appear to be or 3 out of my 4 grandchildren must have been asleep you're in that class and before anybody does the maths the other three live in West Sussex

Memorial held at Auschwitz on International Holocaust Remembrance Day

On International Holocaust Remembrance Day, dozens of former prisoners, priests and staff of the Auschwitz Memorial laid wreaths at the former German Nazi concentration and extermination camp to commemorate the 74th anniversary of the camp's liberation, on January 27, 1945.

I see that also the genocide in many other countries across the last decades has been remembered too especially in places like Rwanda I think it's important to remember all these acts of genocide it's a shame that they weren't greater publicized
