Les Munro, aged 96 years the last of the Dambusters pilots has died in hospital in Auckland NZ.

Fred barns Wallace never forgave himself after the raid with the loss of all the air crews. the raid never did much for the bringing of the end of the war. jp

A great squadron on that mission,and sad that some were lost,but at least it was a success and that is what mattered most to them all.
A great Movie made from the true event a Film that I loved!
Yes indeed we will never forget Men like that who did so much during the War! So brave and dedicated!
Rest now in Peace and know that all you efforts were appreciated then and now!
Salute to all the great Pilots,Navigators,Radio Operators and the rest of the great RAF!

I at least can say it was a privilage and honour to serve with the RAF as Wireless Operator!
Be it in a small capacity,but also of some importance !

John, That myth of not doing anything for the war has been disproved.
The loss of production was being felt in Germany due to the damaged inflicted by the damage to the dams.
Hitler ordered the removal of forced labour from the coast of France to repair the damage to the dams and the surrounding factories.
With the removal of the forced labour the German European coastal defences were incomplete and the D Day landings could take place.

Many years ago on holiday in Lincolnshire, we stopped at place (memory gone) , there was a massive new shed and in it was Lancaster bomber, which was being restored. Managed to get onboard, boy was it cramped, you had to move in the crouched position.
The owner said that the bomber had been left behind, there was no airstrip has it had been converted into farm land, so I don't know if it is still there.

As an aside to the main thread, what an appalling state of affairs that Mr Munroe was about to auction his Medals in order to help provide towards the upkeep of the Bomber Command Memorial in London. Thankfully Lord Ashcroft offered to buy them instead and donate the money to the to the RAF Benevolent Fund. The collection including Mr Munroe's logbooks and associated memorabilia will now go on display in his home country New Zealand. Lord Ashcroft, has the largest collection of Victoria Crosses. I believe he paid £75,000.......... We appear to have one Lord worthy of his title!

We had a man here in Melbourne who attended the local community health centre where I volunteer. He came to Oz after the war and told us stories of his work as an engineer on some of the planes used in the raid. Passed away a couple of years ago.

i have some german friends the wife ..the name of irmgard was in an area that was ....upon waking up flooded ...she said the peaple around her were very low in moral and getting around or getting supplies was very difficult.......the factor of......they have bombed the dam was .....again very soul destroying......the girl lost her father on the russian front taken at stalingrad ....and even in 1957 the ruskis were sending some back to germany without naming them she said they crossed into germany on television and her family sat looking for hours each time a release was made but he did not come.......moral is a major part in a war .regards cappy

Talk of a remake of the film Dam Busters, with Tom Hollander (who) playing Gibson. Colin Firth to play Barnes Wallis and for the PC th black labrador will be renamed Digger. Stephen Fry has been lined up as one of the writers.
If it does get remade bet it won't be as good as the original.
