Thanks so much for all the additional thoughts on whether he was MN or RN. As mentioned I know every little, as we lost him in 1980 and then when we lost Nan years later there was a massive mix up with a house clearance company and we pretty much lost everything. It's so sad and so trying to piece things together. I know Nan for example was in the Land army, think at this stage of their lives they were both up in Eskdale, Cumbria. Always thought he was MN from what I recall Mum telling me, but maybe that was not the case. Could he have moved over to RN for example during wartime? Had a look through what few photos I have and come across this one which clearly shows HMS (but can't see a ship name frustratingly). This is all so interesting and I truly appreciate every single piece of advice from you all, thanks so much.

Well have been trying but oh! such a very long line of searches to go through. This would involve full time work for endless hours.
Because the Records of Servicemen, are not in Alphabetical order , makes it so much more difficult to try and locate a name . Firstly there is the Seamans Number which of course if known would be easy! Then the Surname and First name come into play plus the DOB (Year)
So as you will see Zach there are many many to go through and it like a needle in a Haystack.

If only they had sorted these by Alphabetical Names?

So for now there seems little hope that we may ever find this elusive Person. What a pity .
But then Miracles do happen! LOL

Thanks so much Doc, you have been so helpful and kind. I just feel so bloody ignorant for not having more info. I have heard back overnight from Navy Command Genealogy Section. Who upon my application for his service record have (rightfully) asked for a Death Certificate or similar. Also, I have had another family member confirm (as confirmed by many of you on here) that it was the RN. Anyway let me see what other info or details/paperwork I can get from the family and I will update this thread. I only really have vague memory of my Grandee who died when I was young and so really would love to know more about him.

Wiil be good to hear what transpires Zack , Yes it is always nice to know more about ones Family Members . I had done lots of research on mine and amazing what i came up with, long process and costly, but in the end all well worth it
