Find a relative
Hello,
I think my dad was in the merchant navy and would like to check. He was John Garrett born 13/05/1922 and died 15/01/2002. I’m sorry I don’t have any more information such as service period but would appreciate any help.
Thank you
Liz

Our collections include the Central Index Register of Merchant Seamen, 1918-1941, which contains a million and a quarter index cards related to the men and women of the Merchant Navy, showing their date and place of birth, the jobs they did on ships and their careers as seafarers.
The Central Index Register is the most extensive Merchant Navy resource at Southampton Archives. Containing 1,250,000 records, it is recognised all over the world as being a major source of information on the British Merchant Navy from the end of the First World War to the early years of the Second.

Re: Find a relative
Hi Liz
Just received a reply to my Email to the Southampton Archives, and as you can read they too are asking for a possible place of Birth. Can you please tell us where he was from?
Hoping that we may be able to clear this issue about him in the Merchant Navy
Cheers
My Letter to them
Good Morning,
As i cannot seem to locate the exact Link for a search of an ex Seamans Record, could you perhaps tell me if he has a record at your Archives at all please!
I have searched the NA Kew but there seems to be nothing there.
John Garrett born 13/05/1922
I unfortunately dont have any other detail, which i know is not helping!
Is there perhaps a Link as well that one could use in the future for Researching Merchant Seaman at the Southampton Archives??
I used to have a Link called The Plimsole Line, but that seems to have been removed.
Many thanks
Vernon
The Reply i received
Dear Vernon,
Thank you for your enquiry, I have conducted a search of our records and whilst we have a number of Merchant Seamans Records for John Garrett, none of them were born in 1922. I know it's a long stretch but if you do have a place of birth also it may help.
Concerning a link for Researching Merchant Seaman at the Southampton Archives, this is the link to our research guide on the subject How to use merchant navy records at Southampton Archives
