WW1 Medal Help!
Hi, I'm trying to find if my Grandfather is entitled to Mercantile Marine War Medal. His Continuous Certificate of discharge shows he sailed into a war zone 1914 1915. Can someone help with this? Thank you!

Enter his details here: https://discovery.nationalarchives.g...dvanced-search
If he's there you'll be able to download his medal card.

Re: WW1 Medal Help!
Thanks for that info. We managed to find his army records but he served in Merchant Navy before that & cannot find records for that.
I'm ex forces & would like to purchase his medal if he's entitled to it but I cannot find anyone who would be able to confirm if he's eligible! I have all his paperwork if more info required - hoped someone on here with historic knowledge could confirm. Thanks!

Re: WW1 Medal Help!
Hello Nick
He should be entitled to the Mercantile Marine Medal and also the War Medal. If you apply for them you would find out if they had already been claimed. In which case, if you want a copy there are a number of sites where you can purchase them quite cheaply. I got replicas of my g/dad's WW1 Medals. Any idea of his ships?
regards
Brenda

Re: WW1 Medal Help!
If you apply to Southampton City Archives, they may be able to supply a copy of his registration card, which ought to give the official numbers of some of the ships he served on. From those numbers the ships he served on can be identified. If you can give us his name, place and date of birth we might be able to add further info.

Re: WW1 Medal Help!
Good morning,
My Grandfather's name John Janssen service no. 126815
I have his actual Continuous Certificate of discharge which is an absolutely amazing document to read!
What I am hoping is that I can clarify that the two voyages mentioned on my reply to Brenda would have entitled my Grandfather to receive the Mercantile Marine Medal? They are 1914 1915 voyages presumably through war zones!
Also would you be able to advise a contact to find out if he was actually awarded this medal?
If I can definitely confirm he received I can then purchase another to wear with my own service medals.
Many thanks Nick

Re: WW1 Medal Help!
#9 have you googled the mercantile war medal yet. It was established in 1919. There is plenty of information there also . If you have been through that lot then you need more expert advice , but if I was looking myself from a blank start I would try the obvious ways he would have received and first would be the MOD. As an ex serviceman you will know there are medals and campaign ribbons. Campaign ribbons are usually in the thousands. If the medal came via a high ranking personage there will be written reference to somewhere , either the Chancellory or MOD records more than likely. Best of luck in your search and hope someone pushes the right button for you. Cheers JS
