I have his actual Continuous Certificate of discharge which is an absolutely amazing document to read!
What I am hoping is that I can clarify that the two voyages mentioned on my reply to Brenda would have entitled my Grandfather to receive the Mercantile Marine Medal? They are 1914 1915 voyages presumably through war zones!
Also would you be able to advise a contact to find out if he was actually awarded this medal?
If I can definitely confirm he received I can then purchase another to wear with my own service medals.
Many thanks Nick

One or more voyages through a danger zone during the war qualified a mariner for the award of the medal, as did service at sea for not less than six months between 4 August 1914 and 11 November 1918. Men who served in coastal trades, such as pilots, fishermen and lightship and post office cable ship crews could also qualify.[2][4][5] There was no minimum qualifying period for those killed or wounded by enemy action, or taken prisoner.[6]

On a search at the National Archives, there seems to be no record of a Medal issues or awarded to him? However i am not 100% sure on this. Best as mentioned to contact the MOD.

Re: WW1 Medal Help!
Nick your grandfather wasn’t Norwegian was he.? Seeing the Js in his name reminded me of a carpenter in his 70s I sailed with about 1954. Different name of course but our senior apprentice was called Jeffrey. And when he was working with chippy , a remark from chippy was “ yust the Yob yeffrey” , this became a standard saying from others when working alongside the senior apprentice , whether it annoyed him or not wouldn’t know but seemed to raise a laugh from anyone there . The Scandanavians all seemed to have trouble pronouncing their Js and Gs. Cheers JS
