Interesting! He was only active with the Navy during World War 2. He came back and worked on land after that!

Sorry, he's not John "Roy" Strachan. He's John Roy, My mothers father.

    Hi thanks for the advice!

I'm not looking for a John Strachan however. John Roy is my maternal grandfather (not a strachan) went by "Jock" to close friends and family.

Perfect, I can certainly do that. My mother said he threw his medals in the fireplace when he got back and suffered very badly from PTSD.

I was going to mention if we were talking about John Roy or John Roy Strachan but as you never questioned previous postings I assumed incorrectly. It is always worth checking that everyone is one the same page

Family lore is important as a first step - perhaps that is all you have and should never be dismissed but it is important to then seek information from primary sources.

If he wasn’t a Strachan then what was his surname or have I missed it ? Was it Roy ? If he was a resident of Fraserburgh and still at sea after the war chances are he may of been in the offshore industry sailed with plenty from there and even just round the corner from Aberdeen even the Aberdonians had trouble understanding their accent at times . #20 Marion,

Got your PM, yes sending to outside email address seems to be on the blink.

    Hello everyone!

I've recently received some photos of a letter my Granda sent back from Iceland whilst stationed there. "Baldur 2" he describes it as a dump and told his mother not to send food parcels!

HMS BALDUR was the naval base at Reykjavik, Iceland - BALDUR II (Accommodation and accounting base, Iceland).

It was indeed! Thanks, he also mentions in the letter that he was due to board the Mary Herd. Which I have discovered was a repurposed trawler. He did mention he was part of convoys and was always on minesweepers, but unfortunately it's very difficult to track down crew or muster lists for the converted trawlers. I could swear I see him in picture of the Northern Gem on the International War Museum website, but I can't confirm if he was every on the boat or in that area for that matter.

Sorry! I'm a bit useless at navigating the website/replying!

Yes his surname was Roy. He swore off the sea when he returned! haha, I am unintelligible when I'm talking in my mother tongue. "phone voice" needs to be used for most people.
