I have a bit of anomaly with other dates I have come across. I have my Grandad as signed on to the
D/S Suderoy at New York 11 of Feb 1942 and signed off at a Glasgow 5th Nov 1942 but also have him signed on to
D/S Kristianiafjord at Liverpool 16th Feb 1942 and signed off New York 29th Sept 1942.
Could this just be wrong dates inputted on files or am I not seeing something.

Going by what Hugh has said in #9 it seems an application [email] to TNA is the next step for the sake of clarity on which actual ships your grandfather served on during WW2 and what the costs will be for the various records you need held by TNA at Kew.
Not knowing the circumstances, cannot say for certain, but if it's your first trip you usually start on the bottom rung of the ladder, promotion after that depends on time served in a certain position, or availability of a superior position, or a determination to go for a 2nd cooks cerificate etc, so many variables. Could have been DOB being 1924, he had shore employment until 18 and then being called up for Armed Service duty was found to be medically unfit for military purposes, which happened to a lot of young men, who then if not in a protected shore job, had a choice of joining the MN or going down the mines. People from the age of 14 to 73 who were not eligible for military service joined the MN to 'do their bit' and because of the high losses of MN personnel in the first two years of the war, a blind eye or Nelson affliction was exercised by Shipping Offices so that vessels had their full complement of crew allowing them to sail.Quote:

My Grandad has been on 2 sunken ships, seems to go astray at some ports and not easy to keep track off, Uncle Albert off only fools and horses comes to mind.

I have been amazed and grateful for the collective response off all who have helped me regarding The Mopan thread and this thread about my Grandad. So much new information for me in such a short space of time has been more than I hoped for.
16, i think most members on this good site are amazed how much time is spent by the members that do this research, and freely given, and its nice to hear back from the recipients when its successful, and of course its interesting for us as members as well.
With regard to both ships, Suderoy doesn't appear to have been at NY on 11 February 1942 as she appears to have been at Curacao from 17 February until 20th February and arrival at New York on 6 March 1942. She was in Glasgow for sign off day though and Kristianiafjord was at Liverpool and New York for both dates.Quote:

On a British ship anyone younger than 18 was considered a young person and was a list of their names in a special part of the Articles of Agreement. JS
