William Henry Neale Atkinson
Hi, I'm needing help with some loose ends.
From the internet and Dad's discharge cert.1016935, I've discovered a lot: e.g. aged 17 he was 2nd WO on SS Narragansett, a fuel tanker called to a mid-Atlantic rescue of burning MV Volturno (1913). He was on SS Farnham when it was bombed in a Spanish harbour (1938) and thanks to a slight accident in Singapore (1941) his ship left without him. That was MV Doryssa - later torpedoed by the Leonardo da Vinci - 53 lost, 9 saved. There were better times as WO on the Carmania and Aquitania.
I need help with any ships between SS Narragansett (1913) and joining HMS Crystal Palace 1914. And how he sailed from Asia & Australia (1941).

Re: William Henry Neale Atkinson
Hi Kathie
Have looked at my usual places and of now no records seem to be available . But going by dates etc i would at least try the National Archives for his CRS10 or the Southampton Archives for a CR10.
I think that he should have a CRS10?
Cheers
You can also look at the Clip Crew lists with the Ships that you have, and if he is found on any in the Clip List then it should give his Previous or Next Ship, that way you can work back and forth!
Cheers
Dont know if any of these will help you at all??

Marian
I have just been on FMP and looked for that CR2 , found it but as i do not have a Sub any longer cannot see it! And although i have used the Single Purchase a few times in the past to assist some on here, i see now that it has again increased from One GBP to 1.50 GBP now ! its getting to be an expensive game this ! LOL
Will wait and see what you can come up with later from there at least a list of Ships would help!
Cheers Will have to look up the Ships by the Official Numbers!

“Run” that was a surprise when I saw it a few years ago. That was until it unlocked a mystery: Why did his army records show Durham as his birth place? Even while the RN was looking for him, he’d joined the army….Kathie

Re: William Henry Neale Atkinson
Doc, the above ships are correct. The first entry in his discharge cert. is 1/11/19 Wandby 106996, so surviving WW1 he went to sea. Could he have lost his first MN papers that should have included SS Narragansett?

Kathie
The Short Service attestation would have been filled in by himself, so dont know why it is shown as such i see also that the address is a different one from other Documents! Possibly living there at the time ?
Cheers

Re: William Henry Neale Atkinson
Kathie
Bit of a Mystery and confusion here, as i see that on the CR2 shown he signed on a Ship 15/10/1924, then not long after it shows another Ship on the 19/10/1924. So looks like he may not have been on the first one long, possibility of short illness?
But then there is a very long Break untill the 20/7/1938 this is really puzzling! Even if he had possibly worked ashore for some time , the next Ship would not have shown on the same CR2 ?? It is quite possible that he lost one of his Books ??
All pretty confusing!
Top right does look like Continuation ? but also can be Condition??????
Cannot make out the Ships name on the CR2 the number does not correspond with my lookup either??
And something i have not seen , wonder what the Rating W.T.U. stands for! ????
