Re: William Henry Neale Atkinson
Hello Doc
What is the Short Service attestation you refer to? Can I view it and in #14 you mention CR2 can I see that somehow?
I'm attaching a relevant page (I hope). Attachment 35041 does that make sense?
By these records he seems to be ashore 1925-1936. He was interviewed for a 1933 newspaper article, described as an amateur tramsmitter, living in Maida Vale. That article gave up the Narragansett story.
I also have a couple of photos that someone might help with, but I'd better see if my uploading skills work first.

Katie
Post #6 is the Short Service Attestation Document shown!
Just remember now though Kathie that it will not relate to your Man, as Marian has said ,she made an error, that Document relates to the Army Attestation for another person with the almost same names! Cheers
And post #8 is the CR2 .
Your Link comes up as an Invalid Link cannot open!
See if you can Open it Kathie, then try and do a Screen Snip, save it as whatever and then post it as a Picture
Cheers
But as you say there was a Break in Service, then yes that makes good sense!
More than likely in 1938 he again either got called back for Duties owing to the threat of the War and served a while during 38/39. After that who knows!???
Cheers
How do I add a Picture to my Post (merchant-navy.net)
Now according to the CR2 as shown the Ship Doryssa was his last Ship , well presumably as its the last entry! There is a Crew list at the National Archives for that Ship in that Year so, possibly you may want to see that Kathie, but of course it will cost!
So just a thought, as that may tell where he went after that last trip??
Cheers

Kathie
Just as an add on here, thee is also the Southamptom Maratime Archives, which may also hold Documents on Atkinson, and as i say its always worth a try.
Email them in the first instance and just ask the Question! Give as much detail as you can.

Re: William Henry Neale Atkinson
Doc, thank you. I believe that attestation was his, I found it long ago and it's details were in a letter to Dad from the War Office.
The dates that the RN was looking for him ("run") overlap with that attestation - I believe he'd signed up for the army, using part of his mother's name. It seemed to explain the mystery.
Attachment 35042 Attachment 35043 Attachment 35044
I'm working on the years ashore (1925-1937), but when he signed up for the SS Farhnam it was the Spanish civil war - six trips which end with the bombing and evacuation to Gibraltar. Then back to Cardiff....
Are there ever records as to why a 'voyage is not completed'?
I'm needing a stiff drink.....................Kathie
Re: William Henry Neale Atkinson
There should be some sort of records on non completed Voyages Kathie.
These i think would be in his records (Full Records) either his CR10 or CRS10 however some entries are just a mess, as in those days Hand Entries wee not the best!
There are also of couse Entries (Logs ) for each Voyage, and these of course can onlt be seen if there is a Crew Listing for the Particular Ship. These Crew lists mostly now available from the University of Canadian Shipping Archives!
There are also of course the Crew Lists kept by the National Archives as well.
There are some interesting entries though!

Re: William Henry Neale Atkinson
Attachment 35057 Doc, I assume Dad had to supply his Reg.221546 to the WO to receive his army record (he needed it to join the Gallipoli Club).
As I said earlier, the dates when the RN was looking for him ("run") overlap with that attestation - I believe he'd signed up for the army, using part of his mother's name. For me it explained the mystery of Durham as birthplace on those records........K.

Re: William Henry Neale Atkinson
Help with CR2 please Doc. I don't know why, but I've never been able to access these. Today is no better - no matter what I try.
Attachment 35064 1915, when he was with the RN, Dad appears to be taking a semaphore exercise. Who are the men?
Re: William Henry Neale Atkinson
Hello Kathie
Who are the Men??? Well Kathie your guess is as good as mine here! I really would not know?? Just a small group of i would say new Recruits on Parade i guess!
What of the CR2 are you having issues with! And where from the FMP Site?
Cheers
All Confused !! LOL
