Help with my Grandfather jobs.
My Grandfather was a merchant navy officer in the 1920s and 30s he didn't work for one particular company, he was on tramp ships all the time some registered in Cardiff where he sailed from most of the time but others from the N East and even 2 ships registered in Glasgow. My question is how did he get his work ( jobs ) was there an officers pool or did he use agency's hope this is ok to post.

Re: Help with my Grandfather jobs.
#1 In all truth you would have to ask someone who went to sea in the 1920s , and doubt there is anyone who could answer that question in all truth. You would find an answer of sorts in mercantile history books . Myself however would think they found employment the same as any other worker and approached an owner of ships , which was the way I did at a much later date. I can’t remember ever getting one job through what was known at a later date as the pool. 0ne in my time to be employed on a British ship one had to get clearance from such. However most of my work was through private advertising by the shipowner through the likes of Lloyd’s list or the Journal of Commerce , or applying direct to the shipowner . Whether that existed in 1920 you may find out on the likes of google .Cheers JS .

Re: Help with my Grandfather jobs.
#1: 1920's and 30's were differing times to war years and I have been told that shipping companies had agents that one would be advised to approach, usually for a fee. There was less discretion on ships and journey's etc. unlike the loose lips sink ships, a list of ships and sailings could be found on the walls of public houses and the landlords could point you in the right direction / to the best connection, a fair few crews could be found in a bar and they would know if more crew were required. Generally, a good local grapevine and your own experience etc would open doors. A fair few ladies of the night could help, by the middle of 1920 there were over 100 shipping companies operating out of Cardiff alone.
Family saw dad's, son's, uncles and cousins etc have work if they needed it.
Much came down to where there was a will, there was a way.
Keith.

Re: Help with my Grandfather jobs.
Well without a name it would be very difficult to know who we are looking for!
So a list of Ships would not help at all in this quest!
But its your call if you cannot post a Name thats your decision!
I can find Crew Lists for some of those Ships at Canada but as said without a name ?????
Sorry
Cheers
